DESCRIPTION
Nitric acid is a so-called strong acid consisting of hydrogen ions and nitrate. Strong acid means that it releases all of its hydrogen ions into an aqueous solution and therefore becomes extremely acidic and corrosive.

RECOMMENDATION
For adjusting the pH of nutrient solutions for irrigation:
The dose depends on the alkalinity of the water, i.e. its hydrogen carbonate ion content. Carry out a raw water analysis to determine the alkalinity.

0.145 l Nitric acid 53% neutralizes an alkalinity of 100 mg/l in 1000 l irrigation water. Remember to leave an alkalinity of 50-100 mg/l in the water to maintain some buffering capacity in the water.
Example: Your water has an alkalinity of 230 mg/l. You want to neutralize 180 mg/l (and keep 50 mg/l). You need 0.145 x 180/100 = 0.261 liters of nitric acid per 1000 l of irrigation water. This corresponds to 2.61 liters per 100 liters of stock solution if the dilution to working solution is 1:100. It is best to have a fertilizer mixer with a separate stock solution tank for pH control.

Nitric acid can be mixed with other fertilizers, but be careful not to allow the pH to become too low in fertilizer tubs containing chelated micronutrients.

We recommend a water analysis of minerals to check that the nutrient solution contains the correct pH and plant nutrient amount. It is also important to analyze recirculated nutrient solutions to be able to adjust both plant nutrition and alkalinity before the nutrient solution goes back to the crop again.
