Ammonium sulphate

FIELD OF APPLICATION
Ammonium sulphate is used in nutrient solutions to supply the plant nutrients nitrogen and sulphur. It is mainly used for plant species that thrive at low pH values, especially blueberries. Ammonium sulphate has an acidifying effect on the soil water as the plant and/or soil colloids take up the ammonium ions and simultaneously release hydrogen ions.

WHY SHOULD I USE AMMONIUM SULPHATE
Ammonium sulphate is used in fertigation as a plant nutrient source of nitrogen and sulphur when you want to lower or maintain a low pH in the soil/substrate.Nitrogen is used by the plant in protein synthesis and enzymes. Sulphur is a component of some amino acids and is therefore also important for protein synthesis. Sulphur is also involved in fat synthesis and energy transfer reactions in cells.

Description of the project

DESCRIPTION
Crystalline ammonium sulphate, intended for use in nutrient solutions. Has an acidifying effect in the soil/substrate.

RECOMMENDATION
The normal dose of nitrogen in nutrient solution is 100 mg/l. If the whole amount of nitrogen would be added as ammonium sulphate, 0.5 g/l nutrient solution or 50 kg/1000 l stock solution (at a dilution of 1:100) is needed. However, keep in mind that ammonium is oxygen demanding and can cause oxygen deficiency in the nutrient solution, especially under warm conditions. Therefore, choose a lower dose!

In outdoor cultivation, a need of 50 kg of nitrogen is expected in a blueberry crop that gives a full harvest. For 3-4 year old bushes 20-30 kg/ha is needed.
Avoid use for foliar fertilization as ammonium sulphate easily causes burns.

Important! Do not mix ammonium sulphate with fertilizers containing calcium, as this will cause precipitation of gypsum (calcium sulphate). Do not add ammonium-rich fertilizers immediately after liming, as the high pH of lime causes ammonia loss.

We recommend a water analysis of minerals to check that the nutrient solution contains the correct amount of plant nutrients. It is also important to analyze recirculated nutrient solutions to be able to adjust both plant nutrition and alkalinity before the nutrient solution goes back to the crop again.
