Potassium carbonate

FIELD OF APPLICATION
Potassium carbonate is used for upward pH adjustment in irrigation water and nutrient solutions with low pH values, while providing potassium supplementation. Potassium carbonate provides a stable pH value in the solution.

Description of the project

DESCRIPTION
Potassium carbonate is an alkaline salt containing carbonate and the plant nutrient potassium. It is also called potash.

Calcareous waters contain carbonates (carbonate and bicarbonate) naturally. The carbonates give the water a buffering capacity, which is important to maintain a stable pH in the nutrient solution. When doing a raw water analysis on your irrigation water, alkalinity, which indicates the amount of buffering substances, is included as the amount of bicarbonate per liter of water.

RECOMMENDATION
Potassium carbonate must be mixed in its own stock solution vessel and added to the nutrient solution in diluted form. Otherwise, when mixed with other plant nutrients in the stock solution, potassium carbonate could cause precipitation of various substances, e.g. due to high pH.

To achieve a pH value of around 5.8, the aim is to maintain an alkalinity of 50 mg/l. In distilled water, 60 g potassium carbonate/m3 is enough to give an alkalinity of 50 mg/liter. At the same time it adds 33 mg potassium/liter.

Standard dosage: 60 g potassium carbonate per 1000 l irrigation water or 600 g potassium carbonate in 100 l stock solution which is then diluted 100 times (1:100). Or if it is possible to set the mixing ratio to 1:1000, 6 kg potassium carbonate is mixed in 100 l stock solution. If any acidic product is added to the nutrient solution, the dose may need to be increased.

We recommend an alkalinity water analysis to check that the alkalinity of the finished nutrient solution is correct. It is also important to analyze recirculated nutrient solutions to be able to adjust both plant nutrition and alkalinity before the nutrient solution goes back to the crop again.
