magnesium sulfate

Categories: SKU: 10025

FIELD OF APPLICATION
Magnesium sulphate is used in nutrient solutions for both irrigation and foliar fertilization to supply the plant nutrients magnesium and sulphur.

WHY SHOULD I USE MAGNESIUM SULPHATE
Magnesium sulphate is important for photosynthesis because the chlorophyll molecule contains magnesium. It is also used in enzymes, in protein synthesis and in cell walls. Magnesium competes with the uptake of calcium and should therefore not be supplied in excessive amounts, especially to plant species susceptible to physiogenic diseases caused by calcium deficiency. Examples are pistil rot in tomatoes, leaf scorch in lettuce and spotted wilt in apples.

Sulphur is a component of some amino acids and is therefore crucial to the plant's ability to produce protein. Sulphur is also involved, for example, in fat production and in energy transfer reactions in cells.

Description of the project

DESCRIPTION
Water-soluble, crystalline magnesium sulphate, intended for use in nutrient solutions and for foliar fertilization. Magnesium sulphate is also known as bitter salt.

RECOMMENDATION
The standard dose of magnesium sulphate in drip irrigation is 0.5 g/l nutrient solution or 50 kg/1000 l stock solution (at a dilution of 1:100).
We recommend a water analysis of minerals to check that the nutrient solution contains the correct amount of plant nutrients. It is also important to analyze recirculated nutrient solutions in order to adjust both plant nutrition and alkalinity before the nutrient solution is returned to the crop.

For foliar fertilization, 10-50 kg/ha in 200-400 l of water is used.
We recommend plant sap analysis to determine the need for which plant nutrients need to be applied as foliar fertilization. The analysis can be repeated at the earliest two weeks after treatment to assess whether the treatment needs to be repeated.

Magnesium sulphate has wetting properties and can be used at 200 g/100 l of water in spray liquid to reduce surface tension.
Do not mix magnesium sulphate with fertilizers containing calcium, as this will cause precipitation of gypsum (calcium sulphate).
